What a glorious sleep in these massive beds and cool quiet room! No one flipping light switches in the adjacent room or peeing in the adjacent bathroom or talking in the hallways....just quiet quiet quiet. :-). This morning even called for a little yoga session it was so zen in here!
We’ve opted out of the in hotel breakfast at this location as there is a bakery across the street that will become our new favourite place I’m sure. We already know that they have cookies that are “to die for”! All four of us have become addicted after only one bite! We aren’t sure what kind they are...maybe they grow some other kind of addictive plants here in the mountains. :-). LOL. Seriously, we think they’re kind of a shortbread but really crunchy...bottom line....delicious! And of course we have the ever present individual packs of Nescafé 3 in 1 coffee to go with them.
That bakery also has peanut butter and so all four of us have been enjoying that. Last night I ordered a peanut butter and cucumber on a baguette sandwich and the girl making it looked at me funny. Although I don’t know why she would as Lynda had already asked for a p.b. and greens sandwich that had cucumber in it too. But....by the time Gail and Darlene asked for a peanut butter sandwich to bring back to the hotel for brekkie....the girl wanted to give them cucumber in it as well. She’s probably over there adding that to their menu as a new item. :-). Leaving our mark in DaLat! LOL!
We dropped off some laundry (that will be ready by 9 tonight) and then wandered down to the lake in search of some lunch today but alas...there weren’t any restaurants to be found around the water. So....we took a taxi back up the hill and discovered that we will be using taxis here for everything! The meter starts at 7,000 which is about 50 cents. Our bill when we got out was less than 10,000 (about 70 cents)! Yes....it will be taxis for us in this hilly little city.
We eventually located a local restaurant where we all enjoyed a wonderful lunch. We were all ordering off the vegetarian menu today and our total bill for the whole table (more food than we could eat and drinks included) was less than $25 CAD.
We are back at the hotel now enjoying another cup of 3 in 1 and a cookie (yes, Lynda stopped on the way back here to pick up a couple more) and we’ve got a plan for tonight. We’ve located a couple of hot spots in a fancy hotel where we’re going to rub elbows with the rich and famous in this mountaintop vacation oasis. We’re also going to hit the night market where we’ll find that street food that DaLat is so famous for. Supposedly one of the famous things we have to try is some kind of hot soy milk drink.
OH SHIT! There had to be something not quite perfect today and it just materialized. Lynda just killed a cockroach on the floor of our room. Damn! Oh well, it’s dead now and I’m sure there aren’t any more of them in Vietnam. LOL! :-).
Tonight we decided on the Lam Dong Gong cultural heritage show. It was great! A van picked us up at the hotel and took us the 20’ish minutes to the village where we were hustled into a barn-like building and given front row seats. The cultural show would consist of dancing and eating BBQ meat and drinking the traditional rice wine (by a straw and from a common pot) of the K’Ho people in the Lat village near the Langbiang mountain. We did it all! Gail took care of the dancing and Lynda, Darlene, and I looked after the eating meat and drinking parts. Well...Gail might have helped a little with the drinking too. :-)
So tonight was a great success but I forgot to include a memorable tidbit from our walk this afternoon! We were passing through the flower market in search of a spot for our lunch...which suggests that we might have been a bit hungry. But the story is all about our fussy friend Gail. We were passing a group of market vendors squatting on the sidewalk eating their lunch that consisted of rice and grilled fish in a styrofoam container. Gail sniffed the air and leered over the shoulder of one poor man as she exclaimed....”Wow! That looks good!” None of the rest of us knew what to do.....Gail won’t eat fish....and here she is wanting to squat with some strange man by a market to share his fish! WTF?! That’s all we can say about that! Although....we did say she’d be eating fish by the end of this trip so perhaps this is the beginning of that shift. LOL. Lynda just asked Gail how many more days are left for her to complete the conversion to becoming a full fledged fish eater...and Gail quickly replied....”7”. We’re not sure if that means that she is happy or sad as she counts down the days. We’re going to go with happy. :-)
That’s it for tonight...so till next time,
Darlorlyngai
P.s.
Lynda just told a story on Gail from tonight. The discussion in the van coming back to the hotel tonight was that it would be so nice to be back in Summerland where there are no horns honking and no motorcycles to dodge and all food looks familiar. Gail’s reply was, “I’m going to hug my house!”
Night night. :-)
